Review of The Hollow (Genesian Theatre)
August 22nd 2007 01:26
Agatha Christie plays have a cult following at the Genesian Theatre and the theatre's latest offering will be sure to delight audiences. This is the only play that the Queen of Crime wrote herself; all other Agatha Christie plays are adaptations of her novels.
The Hollow is set around a weekend in the country which takes an ugly twist when one of the guests, Doctor John Christow, is shot dead. As everyone, it seems, has a motive for pulling the trigger, the question of whodunnit will have you guessing until the very end. Is it his eager-to-please wife, played by Genevieve Mortiss? His rival Edward, played by Tom Massey? His mistress, a sculptor played by Melanie Robinson? Or the famous actress next door who always gets her own way? Equally suspicious are the weekend’s hosts, Lady and Sir Henry Angkatell, and their rather too-knowing butler.
This is a good amateur play with an experienced cast and crew. The period set designed by Grant Fraser suits the play and the lighting design by George James Wright is simple but effective. The music design is by Tim Bennett. The costumes, designed by Susan Carveth, are also fitting.
