Review of Stella by Starlight (Ensemble Theatre)

July 29th 2007 08:05
Stella by Starlight - Ensemble Theatre - Sydney

Stellar performances by well-known Australian actors make Stella by starlight a very enjoyable theatre experience. The production played to a full house of appreciative theatre-goers. Contrary to the Sydney Morning Herald review of this play, I had no problem with the play's pace. There was no weak link in the cast and the Irish accents were refreshingly consistent throughout.

The gentle and apologetic Stella is played well by Sarah Chadwick. Her dictatorial husband, Dermot, is convincingly portrayed by Paul Gleeson. The play commences with the couple’s daughter (Kellie Clarke) preparing for her school ball. At the same time the couple are awaiting the arrival of old friends Geraldine (Kate Raison) and Paul (Mark Owen-Taylor) who are due to visit to see their god-daughter off and to witness a comet collide with Jupiter. Meanwhile, Tara’s date, Tommy (Leigh Scully), alarms Dermot when it is discovered that his nickname is “Needles”.

The play tackles the Irish inferiority complex with regard to class and status reflected in Dermot's struggle to impress his guests and salvage some dignity after his "redundancy". Whilst the play is a drama, it is also full of humour. Perhaps the final message of the play is not to be too hasty in judging others and oneself.

Stella by starlight is playing at the Ensemble Theatre from 21 June 2007 to 28 July 2007.

Director: Andrew Doyle is to be commended for a fine production with crisp performances.

Sound: Almost inevitable that the song “Stella by Starlight” would be played at the end.

Lighting: To my untrained eye, the lighting was simple but effective.

Set design: I particularly liked the National Geographic shop inspired set.

Restaurant: Bayly’s restaurant now has a new chef (Ashraf Saleh) and staff. Whilst the food was of a good quality, it does not meet the exceptionally high standard of the departing chef. Those seeking an "I could not do this at home" experience may be a little disappointed. Prices have also increased slightly. That said, the service has definitely improved and the staff are very friendly and obliging.
